One of my favorite cakes, partly because it was surprisingly easy and partly because the customers were so pleased, was the Superhero Cake from the boys’ birthday in 2018.
By far the most fun part was making the Hulk Fist. So, of course I did that first. Also, I wasn’t sure if I would be successful, and it was kind of the cornerstone of the whole cake… so, you know.
Step One: Make Rice Krispie treats according to whatever recipe you like. I suspect you could also do this with other kinds of cereal marshmallow goodies too. I used ones with red and green coloring, because it was December, and that’s what you get in December. I first mashed the hot krispy marshmallow mess into a tupper ware container to make the bulk of the fist. Once it cooled, I molded it to look like a fist and did some carving.
Once the carving is done, the rest is pretty easy. Make your fondant using whatever recipe you like (or you could buy it, but really the homemade stuff is MUCH tastier, and it’s not all that hard). Color it with GEL coloring. Roll it out, drape your fist, and then have fun shaping it just the way you want.
Next up, cakes! I baked two for this. The bigger one is lemon blueberry buttermilk and is one of the cakes most asked for by my fans. The other is a gluten free chocolate, because there is always at least one gluten free kid at the birthday parties.
Once the cakes had some buttercream on them, it was time for more fondant. Luckily I had tons of Hulk Green leftove to cover the Green lantern bottom layer. I must admit the blueberries this time made it a bit lumpy, but it worked out alright.
I used a few different blue gel colorings to get just the right color for Superman.
One of the trickiest bits to this cake was getting the exploding part at the top right. This requires remembering to lay down some cardboard or wax paper on the buttercream BEFORE you lay on the fondant. I forgot the first time. I had to remove the whole thing and start over. (Fondant is ruined by touching buttercream). After you slice the top, peel back the corners to make it look explodey. (technical term) Then you have to gently pull the paper out.
And here they are all stacked up! In case you were watching the clocks in the background, this one did take me ten hours, but to be clear that was not ten hours of ACTIVE time. There was a whole lot of waiting and doing other things as things cooked, cooled, dried, etc. Also, the incident with the blue fodnant slowed me way down. And one very happy customer and his hulk fist.
